A Unique, Voluntaryist Take on Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

Last Wednesday, right after Charlie Kirk was shot, I went Live. I did a 4 1/2-minute “Instant Grace.” At the time, we didn’t yet know that Kirk had passed away.

On June 14, after a Minnesota State House Speaker and her husband were murdered, and a State Senator and his wife were shot, I also did a four-minute Instant Grace.

Like most of you reading this, I have an “analysis advantage” because I’m NOT on one of the partisan teams. I also have a voluntaryist mindset, steeped in grace, so that…

My initial response to both of these “stop the presses” acts of apparent political violence was consistent.

So many, many partisans seem incapable of intellectual and moral consistency. We have to show them how to do it!

That’s why we sat down on Friday and recorded the following installment of Gracearchy with Jim Babka

Let’s be clear. Charlie Kirk advocated for political force, and that’s bad. But he encouraged dialogue between disputants, and that’s the first baby step to grace. On our program, we call it “sitting down to have lemonade.”

Politics lures us away from grace

Many “in the fight” don’t recognize that, in fighting monsters, there’s a real risk of becoming like them.

They also don’t realize that they’re fertilizing the very things they claim to hate.

This episode covers a lot of ground. Here are some of the other things Bill Protzmann and I discuss…

  • Why mere words don’t justify violence.
  • Censorship and overreaction are bad possible outcomes.
  • The political right and left are mirroring each other, and it’s dangerous.
  • The State exploits crises to grow — don’t help it.
  • Security begins with you; the government fails at it.
  • Symbolic gestures aren’t real compassion.

We conclude with a discussion about how to stay grounded and remain hopeful, even optimistic.
