A Vivek Ramaswamy H-1B Tweet exploded into a debate.
The subject of that Tweet was…
The economic need for immigrants.
Vivek H-1B Debate
I couldn’t help thinking that Vivek was mildly in error.
On the other hand, his critics were fundamentally wrong. They lacked awareness and humanity.
I decided to present a grace-based, libertarian approach…
1: I’m even more pro-immigrant than Vivek is. The difference seems to be that Vivek sees economic units, while I see unique persons made in the image of their Creator.
2: Vivek’s MAGA critics are Know Nothings. The Know Nothings were triggered, and overt racism came out. By the way, neither of these statements are ad hominem labels. I bring the evidence.
3: There is a better way if we look at real human beings and their natural drive to flourish instead of treating people as economic units.
In fact, an H-1B visa is not an inherently gracious or libertarian idea. But we might need these visas as a compromise – something I also explain.
OR…
Be Wiser Than Everyone Else
The other shows about the Vivek H-1B debate have all focused on partisanship, considering only these one or two things.
A. What does this mean to American workers? Pick your side, the rich vs the working class.
B. What is the impact on the Trump/MAGA movement?
Watch other shows, and you hear these themes repeatedly – A or B or A+B. And that’s it.
But if you tune in to this episode of Gracearchy with Jim Babka, you’ll have unique, insightful things to contribute to conversations about work visas and immigration.
For example, the alleged defenders of the working class are essentially asking, “Why aren’t there more opportunities for the cogs?” But is that the best possible outcome we can generate here, or is that just more knee-jerking, unimaginative partisanship?
The truly libertarian approach is easier to see when you have your grace lenses on.
Indeed, there’s a fundamental thinking error at work on both sides. This error begins when we abstract and generalize from our own narrow experience, instead of personalizing and relating with real human beings.
