The trauma that didn’t ruin Jim Babka’s thinking or corrupt his principles.
I’ve known Jim Babka for more than a quarter-century. He doesn’t talk about it much, so most people don’t know that when he was a kid, Jim and his family were the victims of a profound tragedy. But he still gets emotional when he talks about it.
But there’s something virtually everyone recognizes about Jim, and I’d explain it this way…
Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight boxing champion, famously said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” It’s so true. There are many versions of that basic idea.
- Everyone has principles until principles become inconvenient.
- Everyone loves facts and logic until facts and logic contradict their emotions.
- It’s easy to favor tough standards and strong punishments until you’re the one being judged and punished.
OR…
So what does this have to do with Jim Babka’s trauma or even a drive after drinking? Does Jim have some kind of drinking problem no one knows about?
No. Jim would never drive after drinking. In fact, he’s never been drunk in his life. Actually, the truth is much more interesting than that.
Sober Assessment of Driving After Drinking
Life punched Jim in the mouth at a very young age, but it hasn’t subverted his principles or his commitment to facts and logic.
Of course, it took him a few years to figure out what the correct principles were, and which direction the facts and logic pointed. Eventually, he got there.
This is all the more amazing because the trauma he experienced would have sent most people down the wrong path.
